By-Law Enforcement Officer

Permanent Full-time • Hagersville / Caledonia

Reporting to the Supervisor, Building Controls & By-Law Enforcement, you will oversee the receipt, investigation and disposition of complaints and violations with respect to provincial statutes, regulations, local by-laws and contracts.

You have a Grade 12 diploma along with 1-2 years’ training in a related discipline (e.g. Law Enforcement) or equivalent, and six months to one year related experience OR equivalent related to same. You have proven ability in the application and enforcement of Municipal and Provincial Legislation and have knowledge of MS Office. A valid Ontario driver’s licence and access to a reliable vehicle are required.

Range of pay: $20.454 - $23.676/hr. + benefits (2008 rate)

Reporting to the By-law Services Manager, you will be responsible for monitoring and ensuring compliance with Municipal parking control by-laws, issuing tags, arranging for the removal of offending vehicles as well as identifying and reporting other by-law related offenses.  You will respond to complaints regarding other Town by-laws and enforce the Town’s various mobile business licensing by-laws related to taxicabs, driving schools, refreshment vehicles; and assist with inspections and road patrols.

 

Knowledge of the Provincial Offences Act, Highway Traffic Act and Canada Evidence Act as well as an understanding of the Municipal Act 2001 and the Dog Owner’s Liability Act will qualify you as a candidate.  You will also have demonstrated experience in security, law enforcement, investigative, or a similar environment along with as a Class “G” driver’s licence, in good standing.  You possess excellent interpersonal, problem solving, organizational skills and have legible hand-writing.  The ability to deal effectively with difficult people and confrontational situations as well as courteously and effectively with the public, staff and other levels of government are essential.  You must be available to work varied shifts, including nights, evening and weekends as well as have knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and experience with electronic parking ticket equipment.

Supervisor, Municipal Law Enforcement

Temporary Full Time Thirteen Month Contract (Maternity Cover)

Description: Reporting to the Municipal Clerk, you are responsible for the management and supervision

of a committed team of municipal law enforcement officers including by-law, animal control, parking,

property standards and crossing guards. As supervisor, you will assist with the preparation and

management of the various operating and capital budgets, research and prepare reports, and act as a

staff resource to the Sign Advisory Committee, Property Standards Appeals Committee, and Parking

Advisory Committee. You are responsible for the coordination of all municipal prosecutions including

administration of summons, crown briefs and court attendance. You are a strong, flexible leader and

accomplished communicator with excellent interpersonal skills, sound judgment and a diligent approach.

As a dedicated member of the team you will also be responsible, as required, for enforcement of

municipal regulatory by-laws, property standards, zoning, noise, animal control, parking and licensing

bylaws, including some weekend duty and responding to inquiries and complaints.

Your understanding of municipal law enforcement, and provincial offences act is founded on five-plus

years of senior management experience in municipal government and either a degree or diploma in a law

enforcement, criminology, police foundations or related discipline and certification of a Municipal Law

Enforcement Officer and Property Standards Officer is preferred..

MUNICIPAL LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS

 

SEASONAL SUMMER POSITIONS

(MAY 17, 2010 - SEPTEMBER 6, 2010)

 

The Town of Wasaga Beach is now accepting resumes for Seasonal Full-Time and Part-Time positions as Municipal Law Enforcement Officers for the summer months.

 

The Seasonal Full & Part-Time positions major duties are as follows: Receive and resolve complaints regarding the following By-Laws; Noise, Fire, Littering, Business Licencing, Parking Control, Clean Yards and Property Standards, etc.  This person must maintain a daily notebook and file detailed reports on each occurrence and issue Provincial Offence Notices and Parking Infraction Notices in accordance with the Provincial Offences Act and use tact and diplomacy at all times.

 

The successful applicants will generally receive days off through the week and be required to work WEEKENDS during the summer.  The successful Full-time incumbents will be required to work a combination of 12 & 8 hour shifts totaling a 44 & 36 hour work weeks and the Part-time incumbents will be required to work 8 hour shifts totaling 32 hours per week. The Municipality will supply appropriate uniforms to the successful applicants; however appropriate black footwear will be the responsibility of each individual. 

 

Qualifications:       - Enrollment in or completion of a College/University Law program

                             - Previous enforcement experience would be an asset

- Must have good public relations & communication skills

                             - Hold a valid Class G Ontario Driver's Licence in good standing

                             - Able to work shift work

                             - Able to work a 44, 36 or 32 hour week

                             - Must be physically fit and of good health

                             - Hold a valid First Aid and CPR certificates

The two (2) positions will provide administrative support to the respective department (Treasury or Municipal Law Enforcement), in addition to the handling and sorting of cash and coin revenue.  Both positions are forty (40) hours a week, working Monday to Friday.

 

Qualifications:      Municipal Law Enforcement Department Assistant      

 

 - Enrollment in or completion of a Post Secondary Program in Law,     Paralegal Studies, Business Administration or related field

                             - Previous experience working in an office and with the public

                             - Must have Cash/coin handling experience
