WHAT IS A PROPERTY STANDARDS OFFICER?

A Property Standards Officer is

"An individual who is employed by any level of government and who is engaged in the administration or enforcement of legislation governing the maintenance, occupancy, repair and improvement of property and the environment".

WHAT QUALIFICATIONS MUST A PROPERTY STANDARDS OFFICER POSSESS?

A successful Property Standards Officer must be capable of performing his/her duties based on technical and procedural competence combined with the use of "good judgment" and:

  • have knowledge of building trades, building inspection, or law enforcement;
  • be familiar with architectural design, construction methods and materials;
  • be acquainted with building and safety codes as well as health and environmental standards;
  • is qualified to contend with the legal procedures required to achieve compliance with the terms and provisions of the "Property Standards By-Law";
  • is adept in dealing with the public in a positive and tactful manner.
